If your level-premium term life period is getting close to its end, start with your current policy. You may have choices worth understanding before making a new application.
I would rather have this conversation while there is time to review the paperwork than after a deadline has passed. Here are the questions I would bring to the insurer.
When does the current premium period end?
Find the policy schedule and ask the company to confirm the date. The end of a level-premium period and the final termination date of coverage may be different. Do not assume a familiar monthly payment will continue unchanged.
Can I renew, and what would it cost?
Some term policies allow renewal even after health changes, but the premium may increase. Ask for the actual renewal schedule and any age limits. A renewal option can be useful information, but the future cost still needs to fit your budget.
Is there a conversion option?
Many term policies offer a limited opportunity to convert to a cash-value policy without new evidence of health. Availability, eligible products, deadlines, and premiums depend on your contract. Ask the insurer to identify your exact conversion deadline and provide written options.
A conversion is not automatically the right answer. Compare the long-term cost and benefits with what you need today. A permanent policy and a term policy serve different time horizons.
What still needs protecting?
Write down the obligations that remain: income your household relies on, a mortgage, dependent care, or other debts. Then look at existing coverage and resources. Your needs may have changed since the policy began; the original coverage amount is not automatically the amount you need now.
What if I apply for a new policy?
A new application may involve underwriting, and the price or availability may differ from what you expect. Ask about the approval process and effective date. Before cancelling existing coverage, confirm that any replacement has actually taken effect and review its terms carefully.
